CUSTOMER PROS: Easy set-up. Works well with Macs. Excellent performance for this price range. (Not the best. You’ll have to jump to a higher price range for excellent quality.) Lots of functions, for example “a selection for paper thickness which could greatly help to minize paper jams.” Vast number of features/functions requires reading the manual. Can send incoming faxes to your PC to read on your computer (and save toner. Print them only if you want to keep them.)  Good quality color scanning. Rarely jams. Wakes up quickly from sleep mode. (2 seconds?)
Can scan from the function panel or from your comptuer (using the ControlCenter3 Software)

“It does everything it says it does.”

CUSTOMER CONS: “Poorly constructed.”  Flimsy plastic parts (but works fine.) Loud. Slow. Loud fan operates for about 10 minutes after copying. Requires lots of power to power up. Reviewer recommends that you do NOT plug into a surge protector as it may trip the switch. Brother recommends plugging the unit into its own wall socket separate from other devices.

Manual is difficult to understand for learning how to scan. Machine will tell you that you’re out of toner (and will stop printing) but you can cover up the toner sensor and print many more copies. Fax speed is rather slow (but not a problem if you don’t do all that much faxing.)  No duplex printing (but it can be done manually.) No Wireless Network feature.

REVIEWER SUGGESTION for increasing darkness of printing: “I had a problem with copies being to light for my liking.I contacted Brothers Help and they gave me information that was not in the USER’S GUIDE.To increase darkness, press menu then enter 216.”

SUMMARY: Mac users will be frustrated but Windows users seem to love this all-in-one printer. Gets great reviews for its ability to save paper with its Duplex (double sided) features. CUSTOMER PROS: Easy, straight-forward set-up (15-minutes.) Fast warm-up, great copy machine, excellent fax.  “Not too big, quiet, and FAST with lots of options.” Converts images into PDF files. Can convert multiple documents into a single PDF. Fast scanning of multi-page documents using the Automatic- Document-Feeder. Duplexing feature excellent. Collates. “No need to turn the paper over to print on the reverse side. This Canon takes care of it for you.”  But “Does not appear to copy 2-sided sheets to 2-sided copies.”  Excellent customer support from Canon.

Color scanning capability (but not color printing.) Small footprint. Large paper tray. Handles envelopes. “Very cost efficient and reliable printer.” No paper jams. Well-written instruction manuals.

From experience, I would suggest modifying the ink density per page once you have set it up. Knock it down a few notches to save on ink. You should not need super dark, super rich prints for regular office use.”

CUSTOMER CONS: A real hassle to interface with Macs (but it can be done. Mac Drivers are not included on the CD, you have to go to the Canon website to download them.) Also, Macs cannot install firmware updates for this model.  Pictures of the machine make machine look larger than it is. “Mixed Networking” among both PC and Mac computers was a problem for some users.

Doesn’t include Wireless capabilities. The Starter Cartridge of Toner didn’t last long (about 1000 copies) so buy a replacement cartridge immediately to have on hand.

One customer said his documents consistently scanned slightly crooked when fed through the feeder tray. The printer is a little “touchy” with the size of paper. Doesn’t scan quite to the edges of the document. Paper tray is awkward.  “Will NOT network with USB print server.” Can NOT hook up to a wireless base station.

While it does Duplex printing, this applies only to printing from PC. “There is no 2 on 2 sided copying and certainly not 2 on 2 sided scanning.”   Also, one customer reported, “The printing is sometimes crooked on the paper, especially on the back side when duplexing.”

Menu functions “tediously complicated and not user friendly.”

The secondary paper feeder (for envelopes and other odd-sized media) accepts only one-sheet-at a time. So if you have dozens of envelopes to print, you may be disappointed.

Loud (but not excessively. Can hear while talking on the phone while it’s running.)

Out-of-Toner light will come on even though it’s not out of toner. You can continue to use the toner cartridge until you don’t like the look of the print quality (but you have to put up with the flashing “low-toner” warning.)

In setting up the network, one person encountered problems, “but these went away once I assigned a fixed IP address to the printer.”

Scanning: “One non-intuitive issue with scanning is that one has to press the SCAN key twice to get USB scanning which I felt should be the default – it defaults to network scanning on the first pressing of the SCAN key.”

Faxing and Distinctive Ring: “My faxing needs are modest, so I have the device hooked up to my phone line and use the distinctive ring detect feature to determine whether the 4350d should pick up an incoming call. This works well, except there is a Catch 22 scenario when the 4350d is “sleeping”. It needs to wake up to determine the incoming ring pattern and if its not the one set for fax, it does not go back to sleep right away (almost like MFP sleep apnea!). Minor irritant if using distinctive ring and have lots of incoming voice calls.”

Canon imageCLASS MF3240 B&W Laser – SNAPSHOT

REVIEWS SUMMARY: This Canon imageCLASS MF324 turned out to be a disappointment to those who wanted to use its fax features. It is best for people with a PC Windows Computer who will not be doing lots of faxing or copying and just need a terrific, low-cost,  B&W laser printer that does one-sided printing. This model will scan in color but prints and faxes only in B&W. Send color scanned images into your computer for use as web-images. Or, you could send them to an on-line digital printing service to receive color prints.

Not compatible with Mac computers.

Some customers reported problems with the fax function connecting properly to their voice phone line. No auto feeder for the Fax so if you need to fax multiple pages on a regular basis, you  may want to consider a different machine with an Auto-Document Feeder. Machine is not super quiet, but not overly-noisy. Probably best for those who do only occasional faxing and can leave the machine in “manual fax” mode. The flat-bed scanner is nice for copying books or magazines or other 3-dimensional objects like drivers’ licenses that you wouldn’t be able to feed through a sheet-fed scanner.

You can scan printed documents into your PC computer and turn them into editable text using the included OCR software.

If you’re using Windows VISTA or Windows 7 or 64-bit programs you will have to download drivers from the Canon website.

There’s no On/Off button. The only way to turn the machine off is to unplug it (or perhaps plug it into a surge protector with an on/off switch.)

One Customer Reviewer, Sriram Sankaran, wrote: “After nearly 2 months of ownership, I am satisfied with the printer. I have printed nearly 3,800 A4 sheets and still have not seen any low toner message. One day I printed nearly 1000 copies, with no issues. For the price I paid this is a great buy.

Another reviewer, G. Oetting, wrote: “I’d recommend this printer for someone who requires black and white printing, book copying, and little or no faxing.”

Loud when faxing. Fax functions are “unfriendly” to use and limited. Paper jams. When using a long 8 or 10-Foot cable, the scanner locked up when trying to scan at 400 DPI or higher. A short, 3-foot cable solved this problem. Poor documentation (but tech support was helpful.) No power button. The only way one customer found to stop the print job they wanted to cancel was to unplug the machine. Terrible for trying to print on backside of paper (paper curls from first trip through the machine and then jams when printing the back side.) Duplex (double-sided) printing almost impossible.

Not network enabled (though one customer said they were able to hook it up to a router with a USB print server to network it with other computers.)  Paper size error message appears if you put an odd sized paper on the scanner. No receiving tray for printed pages. LCD panel difficult to read. Difficult to use for incoming faxes.

NOTE: Some of the older reviews mention that the software for this machine is not compatible with ‘Windows 7′ however, there now are software drivers for ‘Windows 7′ 64-bit available at the Canon Website.

CUSTOMER PROS: Low Price for the quality and features it offers.  Easy set-up. Easy Ethernet set-up. Outstanding b&w print quality. Good print speed. Solid (heavy). Feels like it is built to last. Easy copying. Collates/sorts/stacks copies. Toner Cartridges are easy to replace and reasonably priced (on a cost/page basis.)  Convenient front paper feeder can be used for printing envelopes. No paper jams. Faxes easy to send. Fast document feeder. Nice quality scans to PDF. Small footprint, but tall.

Once networked, you can configure and manage the computer via your web browser from any computer in your network (without having to install anything.)

Reviewer Gary D. Cadwell wrote: “The bottom line is this printer is a true workhorse for a small business. Not once has it jammed. Copies are easy. Scanning is even easier and also very fast compared to other multi-function scanners I’ve used. It will scan legal size paper by adjusting the software. Faxing is easy. It runs day and night without a problem. I have no hesitation recommending this unit and I would definitely purchase again. ”

CUSTOMER CONS: When machine is cold, the first copy takes 30 seconds to complete. Machine is heavy and large, requires 2 people to move it.  Color saturation “not as deep as I would like.”  Noisy when  printing (quiet when sleeping.) Noisy when warming up to make the first print. Draws lots of power (“room lights dim when it is warming up.”)  Does NOT do duplex copying. The MFC-9440CN model is NOT promoted as “wireless ready” (“but will work well in a wireless network with an Ethernet connection to the wireless router.”)

Scanner does not scan to the very edge of 8.5 wide paper (it scans to approximately 8.27 inches wide and is not a “border-to-border” printer.  Mediocre, dull print colors.  One customer had problems with faxing over a VoIP phone line. Problem if you have an answering machine on the same line.

Flat-bed glass are is only letter-sized (not legal.)

When color toner is out of one color, you have to replace them all at once which is expensive. (NOTE: other said you could switch to monochrome printing  and continue printing in B&W if the color cartridges are out of toner. Toner is expensive and not usually available locally.

Not photo quality printing (but doesn’t claim to be.) Not good for printing glossy pictures or brochures. (Brother warns that even paper advertised as laser glossy will gum up the machine.) Good for “spot color” and color flyers.

Installation difficult (and documentation was incomprehensible) but once it was set up it was easy to use. Lots of features, but not intuitive. Hard to find how to work them in the manual. Problems with customer service.

SUMMARY:

This machine can connect to a single computer (via USB) or to an Ethernet Network (and from there to a Wireless router.) Many reviewers noted that when first coming out of sleep mode, the first page printed takes 30 seconds to come out.  It uses lots of power–lights may dim when machine is powering up. Toner cartridges run out sooner than they should and machine simply stops printing. This is a color machine but not good for printing color photos. Colors are flat/dull. Excellent value for home or small or mid-sized office.

NOTE: Concerning the toner cartridges running out, one reviewer wrote:
“A quick web search informed me that there was a way to reset the cartridge count and after that no more warnings and the printer is going strong. My advice is to not replace the toner when the machine reports a warning–just search out the menu-based toner reset trick (skip the more cumbersome tape on the toner cartridge option though) and extend your printing time my hundreds of more pages. ”

Another Reviewer offered this TIP for Saving Toner:
1. With power on, open the toner access main door (You will get a “door open” message in the LCD.)
2. Hit the “Clear/Back” button and… you go right to the “Toner Reset Menu”.
3. Using the up ^ Down > “Search” arrow buttons you can then scroll through reset options for each of the printer’s [4] toner cartridges!

4. For each for these cartridges is the option to reset for low yield = S (small?) or High Yield – H
5. Using the number keypad, select option #1 (to reset each to the size you have installed.

SUMMARY: Many reviewers have used this “workhorse” B&W Laser Fax Copier Printer in office settings for 2 to 5 years without problems. Some have gone on to buy several replacements of this model. One reviewer said after 2 years the machine starts to make some noises and has to be repaired: “We found the repairs to be more expensive than the machine itself.” Because it’s so inexpensive, they found it cheaper to buy a new machine than to have it repaired. Some  praised Canon’s customer service. Several said they use it as a network printer (though that’s not a feature promoted in the description.)

CUSTOMER PROS: Reliable and easy to use. Fast. Doubles as a Laser Printer and Copy Machine.  “Quiet and fast.” Used in mid-volume office for 4 years without a problem. Superb print quality. Manual is clearly written. Easy to understand. Machine scans pages first and then faxes them when the line is free (so you don’t have to stand and wait for your document pages to feed through the machine. This also eliminates the problem of experiencing a paper jam during actual transmission.)

This model is not network ready (but has a USB connection). One reviewer wrote “You can also network it on your local LAN in your office to be a network printer too.”

CUSTOMER CONS: Some assembly required. Pieces seem flimsy but work fine. User Manual is printed in small font, hard to read.  Machine comes with a “starter toner cartridge” good for only about 300 pages. Full toner cartridge costs half as much as the machine.

SUMMARY: Many reviewers like the fact that this machine scans the page into memory before sending the fax. That means you don’t have to stand there waiting and watching to make sure none of the pages of your document jam during transmission.  A couple of reviewers  complained of  problems with the machine drawing lots of power when powering up (causing one reviewer’s lights to flicker and knocking out their DSL modem.) Brother Support suggested that they plug the machine into a wall circuit that was separate from the circuit running the other machines.

Overall, the reviewers give the IntelliFax 2820 4 stars for Ease of Use, Features, and Print Quality but only 3.5 stars on Noise Level.

CUSTOMER PROS: Big improvement over previous model in that the new paper feeder will accept re-used paper (already printed on one side) with few paper jams. Connects to computer through USB to use as a printer (though you will have to purchase a USB cable.)  Can schedule faxes to send later (and to multiple recipients.)  Features are easy to use. Machine warms up quickly. Easy-to-use paper tray. Small footprint (though others thought it was large.) The printouts come out the top of the machine (rather than the back) so it takes up less room. Fast printing (especially compared to  inkjet machines.) Excellent text quality. Faxing Speed: excellent (about 50% faster than most budget fax machines.)

Brother offers a toll-free test line to fax in your warranty registration and to receive a text fax back. The PC Faxing software allows you to send a fax from your PC to the fax machine and out the phone line without having to print it first (saves paper.) “Very fast.”  Good at auto-distinguishing between an incoming voice call and a fax (if you have voice/fax using the same phone line.)

Scans the page and puts it into memory before faxing (so there’s no problem with a page jamming as it’s being transmitted and causing a problem.) Toner cartridges last a long time and don’t dry out like inkjet cartridges.

Machine can tell you how many pages you’ve  printed out over the life of the machine. Copier works perfectly.

Reviewer Derek Hofmann wrote: “If you’re concerned about junk faxes wasting money on ink, or if you want to make a lot of copies, or if you need both a printer and a fax machine and want to save money by buying just one, this machine is a very good investment.”

CUSTOMER CONS: Machine takes up lots of desk space. Although the menu screen will tell you there’s an error (paper jam, no paper, or other warning, etc.) the machine would benefit from an LED indicator signal which would light up to alert you to a malfunction since the menu screen is small and difficult to read. (This machine does beep when a fax goes through. If the fax doesn’t go through, it redials (only once) and if still unsuccessful will print out a report to tell you it didn’t go through.)

Paper curls from heat of the printer (according to other reviewers, a better quality paper will solve this problem.)
Paper jams (after about 6 months of use.)  Not energy-efficient – this machine is rated to use 8.8 Amps (which is a lot) and it repeatedly tripped one reviewer’s circuit breaker.  Noisy while printing (but fan turns off in a few minutes and it’s silent.)

If you have Caller-ID service, the machine announces verbally over the fax machine who is calling (a nice feature but, according to the reviewer, you can’t turn off this feature.) Machine will not print a confirmation of a received fax. Had some difficulty in setting the auto-redial on busy numbers. Can scan and fax only sheets of paper (it is not a flat-bed scanner so you can’t copy things like driver’s licenses or books.)  The machine does not have a speaker phone (although you can hear what’s happening at the other end of the line over a speaker, you will have to pick  up the handset to talk to people.)

The Re-Dial function will make only one redial attempt (after 5 minutes) so you have to keep going back to the machine and resending the fax if it doesn’t go through after the second attempt.

Document feeder picks up multiple pages at once (this might be solved by switching to another brand of paper. Another reviewer suggested using 24 lb laser quality paper and staying away from the low-quality paper.) Curled paper coming out of the paper also caused papers not to stack properly in the out-tray so they would overflow.

One customer reported repeated problems with Brother customer support not following up on what they promised to do.

Print quality is excellent but disappointed in the scanning quality and quality of some incoming faxes (this could be caused by the low-quality of the sender’s fax machine.)

More than one owner said their machine displayed a “Toner Life End” even with a new cartridge.
However, another reviewer offered this solution:

“If you get a Toner End Life error that you can’t clear this will work . . .

“Open front cover, leave toner cartridge in unit.
Press options button, when “Replace Drum?” comes up quickly press the Start button. Immediately press the “1″ and “0″ button. The display will say “Accepted” and the error will go away. Make sure you enter those buttons quickly or it will not take.”

NOTE: This machine comes with a “starter” toner cartridge (good for approximately 1500 pages.) You may want to buy a replacement cartridge (below) at the same time to save on shipping and to have a back-up on hand. Also, while it does have a USB port, it does not include a USB cable if you intend to connect it to your PC or Mac.
