HP 2140 Professional Quality Plain-Paper Fax Copier – SNAPSHOT
SUMMARY: If you are looking for a small, attractive fax machine mostly for sending stuff out, this may do the trick. Just turn it on when you need it (so that it doesn’t try to answer all of your voice calls, unless you have Distinctive Ring service and a number assigned just to the fax machine.) If you expect to be receiving lots of faxes, probably a B&W laser-toner machine would be better.
NOTE: This model is often the #1 Selling Fax Machine at Amazon.

The cost of replacement InkJet cartridges is the main complaint about this machine. If you are mostly just sending faxes, it may not be a problem for you.
CUSTOMER PROS: Nice looking machine. Great value. Decent speed. Decent (but not great) print quality. Small footprint on desk saves space. Easy to set up and use. HP offers free dial-up testing for set-up so you don’t have to call a friend to test it out. Auto-Redial feature is nice when getting a busy signal.
CUSTOMER CONS: Replacement ink cartridges expensive and run out too fast. Noisy, Slow. Paper jams. Several people complained of calling HP support (in India), being on the phone for hours, and having trouble understanding technicians. User’s Manual: Hard to find what you’re looking for (but easy to read.) If you’re going to be receiving lots of faxes, some customers suggested opting for a more expensive toner-based fax machine because the inkjet cartridges are so expensive (they cost half as much as the machine and don’t last very long.) Some people were upset that HP was making so much money off of the consumables. Others suggested using a fax program on your computer to receive faxes and print them out on a laser printer. The machine does not have a receive tray to catch incoming faxes. Won’t interface with one user’s phone system and answering machine (if you leave it turned on, it will answer all calls, fax and voice.) Telephone Handset Cord too short. Small LCD Screen.
